Nebulizer
A nebulizer
is a device used to change liquid medication to an
aerosol particulate form. The aerosolized medication is extremely
beneficial when inhaled and deposited in your lung. It's effects
are almost immediate in reversing bronchospasm .
The nebulizer
or "neb" consist of a medication cup , a "tee"
piece , mouthpiece and tubing. Once assembled it can be used for
aerosol therapy. Nebulizer need a secondary source, a compressor,
to help breakdown the liquid to particle form. The compressor
powers the nebulizer with a source gas of air to move the liquid
medication against a baffle in the cup. This is often confused,
a compressor is needed in addition to a nebulizer for aerosol
therapy. You may see them referred to as "Compressor nebulizer".

Nebulizers
are available as a disposable single patient use and re-usable.
The disposable nebulizer is ideal in a situation as an emergency
room visit or a short hospital stay. In a home setting a nebulizer
canoften be used more than once if cleaned after each use. It
will last approximately twoweeks if cleaned regularly.
"Re-usable" nebulizer is much
more durable
and will last approximately six months to a year.
The big advantage is that the design is more complex and can offer
a treatment with increased effectiveness of the medication dosage.
A second advantage is it can be boiled for disinfection. Both
disposable and re-usable nebulizer work extremely well and should
be part of your aerosol therapy care nebulizer plan. "Re-usables"
for every day therapy and disposables for grandma's, babysitters,
traveling, school, and to have on hand just in case one breaks.
